Anathematization is the act of declaring someone or something anathema, which means to curse, condemn, or excommunicate. This practice is found in various religious and political contexts, signifying a formal rejection and denunciation. The term originates from the Greek word "anathema," meaning "a thing devoted to evil" or "a curse."

In religious traditions, anathematization is often a severe spiritual penalty. It can involve exclusion from a religious community, denial of sacraments, and a declaration that the condemned individual is outside the grace of God. Historically, religious councils and church authorities have used anathematization to uphold doctrinal purity and address heresy or apostasy. The Council of Trent, for instance, issued numerous anathemas against Protestant doctrines during the Counter-Reformation.

Politically or socially, anathematization can refer to the ostracism or condemnation of individuals or groups deemed unacceptable or dangerous. This might involve public denouncement, social exclusion, or the formal stripping of rights or privileges. The intent is to mark the anathematized entity as an enemy or threat, thereby isolating it from the broader community. The consequences can range from social stigma to severe persecution.
