Anaesthesiologists work as part of surgical teams, monitoring and maintaining patient safety, airway patency, ventilation, and cardiovascular stability, and determining the appropriate depth and duration of anesthesia. They manage fluids, blood products, and postoperative pain plans, and may participate in preoperative optimization and recovery planning.

Modern anaesthesia began in the 19th century with agents such as ether, and incremental advances in monitoring, airway devices, pharmacology, and safety protocols have significantly improved outcomes.
