Ammoniakutsläpp refers to the release of ammonia (NH3) into the atmosphere. Ammonia is a colorless gas with a pungent odor, primarily produced through biological processes, but also by industrial activities. In the environment, ammonia plays a role in nutrient cycling, but excessive emissions can have detrimental effects.

The largest source of ammonia emissions globally, and particularly in industrialized nations, is agriculture. Livestock farming, specifically from animal manure and urine, is a significant contributor. The breakdown of nitrogen-containing organic matter in manure releases ammonia gas. Fertilizer application, especially nitrogen-based fertilizers, also leads to ammonia volatilization from soils.

Beyond agriculture, industrial processes can also be sources of ammonia emissions. These include chemical manufacturing, waste incineration, and certain industrial cleaning operations.

High concentrations of atmospheric ammonia can contribute to air pollution. It can react with other pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, to form fine particulate matter (PM2.5), which has negative impacts on human health, leading to respiratory and cardiovascular problems. Ammonia emissions can also contribute to eutrophication of water bodies and acidification of soils, harming ecosystems and biodiversity. Furthermore, ammonia can damage buildings and cultural heritage sites through its corrosive properties. Controlling ammonia emissions is therefore an important aspect of environmental protection and public health initiatives.
