Ammattikorkeakoulu, commonly abbreviated AMK, is a Finnish university of applied sciences. It provides degree-oriented higher education with a strong emphasis on professional practice and regional relevance. University of applied sciences (UAS) operate within the Finnish higher education system and are distinct from research universities by focusing on applied research, development projects, and close collaboration with working life.

Degree structure typically includes Bachelor's degrees (180 ECTS) and Master's degrees (60–90 ECTS). Programs are designed to combine theory with work placements, project work, and industry partnerships. After completing a Bachelor's degree, students may continue to Master's studies, often requiring a relevant degree and work experience. English-taught programs are available at some institutions, supporting international students and mobility.

Applied research and development activities are integrated with teaching, allowing students and staff to participate in projects that address real-world needs. UASs collaborate with municipalities, businesses, and public sector organizations to support regional development, innovation, and digital transformation.

Governance and funding come from the state, municipalities, and fees where applicable. The system is overseen by the Ministry of Education and Culture, and programs are accredited and regulated to ensure professional relevance and quality. Historically, Finland’s polytechnics were established in the 1990s to provide practice-oriented higher education; they were renamed ammattikorkeakoulut and organized as universities of applied sciences within the national framework.
