Ambient temperature, or surrounding temperature, is the temperature of the environment surrounding an object or system. It is distinct from the object's own temperature and from localized surface temperatures. In meteorology and many engineering applications, ambient temperature typically refers to the air temperature measured in the shade at a standard height above the ground, to minimize effects from direct solar radiation and ground heat.

Measurement and standards: Ambient temperature is measured with thermometers, thermocouples, RTDs, or electronic sensors. In weather reporting, air temperature is measured in a shelter that shields the instrument from direct sun and precipitation. In laboratory and industrial contexts, ambient temperature is specified within a range (for example, around 20–25 °C) as a reference condition for testing, performance, and storage.

Applications and significance: Ambient temperature influences chemical reaction rates, material properties, and the performance of equipment. It affects heat transfer calculations, HVAC design, and the stability of products during storage. In electronics, high ambient temperatures can increase leakage currents and reduce battery life, while very low ambient temperatures can impair performance or cause materials to become brittle.

Practical context: In everyday use, “room temperature” commonly refers to a conventional ambient around 20–25 °C, suitable for human comfort.
