Alvrekisteröinti is the Finnish term for VAT (Value Added Tax) registration. It refers to the process by which businesses and certain self‑employed individuals obtain a VAT identification number, allowing them to charge VAT on taxable supplies, reclaim input tax, and comply with the European Union’s common patent system for indirect taxation.

In Finland, businesses with an annual turnover that exceeds the threshold set by the Tax Administration (Avoin verohallinto) are required to register for alv. The current exemption limit is 15,000 euros; businesses below that level may still opt for voluntary registration to benefit from input tax recovery. Small enterprises, freelancers, and sole proprietors may also register if they expect to exceed the threshold or if they receive wholesale invoices that include VAT.

The registration procedure typically involves filling out the “Alv- ja Kulutusverorekisteri” forms online or via paper submission, providing details such as company name, legal form, address, financial figures, and intended nature of business activities. Verification of identity and proof of a Finnish business address are also required. Once approved, the business receives a unique VAT identification number (alv-numero), which must be displayed on all invoices and then communicated to clients and suppliers.

Registered entities must submit regular VAT returns—usually monthly or quarterly—detailing taxable sales, purchased goods and services, and the net VAT due or refundable. Penalties for late filing or inaccurate submissions may lead to administrative fines. Many businesses appreciate alv registration because it provides access to tax credits and strengthens credibility with partners. However, it also imposes additional accounting responsibilities and the obligation to maintain proper records in accordance with Finnish tax legislation.
