altomezzosoprano
An altomezzosoprano is a vocal classification for female singers. It occupies the range between a contralto and a mezzosoprano, often characterized by a darker, richer tone than a standard mezzosoprano, but with more agility and higher range than a typical contralto. While precise definitions can vary among opera houses and vocal coaches, the altomezzosoprano voice typically extends from around the G below middle C to the A above middle C, or sometimes a bit higher. This classification is less common than mezzosoprano or soprano. Roles written for altomezzosopranos often require a strong lower register and considerable dramatic weight, though they may also possess the ability to execute more lyrical passages. Some singers may be classified as altomezzosoprano due to their timbre and vocal weight, even if their range technically falls within the broader mezzosoprano spectrum. The term is sometimes used to describe singers who bridge the gap between the two adjacent voice types, possessing characteristics of both.
