These zones generally occur above the treeline and below the permanent snow and ice cover. The specific altitude at which these zones appear varies with latitude and local conditions, but they are a prominent feature of mountain ranges worldwide, including the Alps.

The lowest of these zones, often referred to as the subalpine zone, typically features dwarf shrubs, hardy grasses, and scattered coniferous trees that can tolerate the challenging environment. As altitude increases, the vegetation becomes more sparse. The alpine zone proper is characterized by meadows with low-growing herbaceous plants, mosses, and lichens. These plants are adapted to withstand strong winds, intense solar radiation, and freezing temperatures.

Higher still is the nival zone, which is dominated by permanent snowfields and glaciers. Vegetation in this zone is extremely limited, consisting mainly of specialized algae and microorganisms that can survive in these extreme conditions.
