Allograftként refers to the status of a graft that originates from a donor of the same species but who is genetically non-identical to the recipient. In medical practice, allografts are used to replace or repair damaged tissues or organs and contrast with autografts, which come from the patient’s own body, and xenografts, which come from a different species.

Allografts can be classified by tissue type and function. Organ allografts include kidneys, livers, hearts, and lungs. Tissue allografts include bone, cartilage, skin, tendons, and corneas. Vascularized composite allografts, such as limb or face transplants, combine multiple tissue types. Donor material can come from deceased or living donors, depending on the tissue and medical context. Processing methods, including screening for infectious diseases, sterilization, and preservation (fresh, fresh-frozen, or cryopreserved), influence graft viability and immunogenicity.

Immunology is a central consideration in allografting. The recipient’s immune system may recognize donor tissues as foreign, potentially leading to rejection. Immunosuppressive therapy is commonly required to improve graft survival, with rejection can be acute or chronic.
