Allogenetic refers to a substance or tissue that originates from a different individual of the same species. In medicine, this typically involves transplants between genetically distinct individuals, such as organ transplants or blood transfusions. The term is derived from the Greek words "allos" meaning "other" and "genos" meaning "kind" or "race."

The key characteristic of allogenetic material is that it is foreign to the recipient's immune system. This foreignness can trigger an immune response, leading to rejection of the transplanted tissue or organ. To minimize this risk, medical professionals strive to match the donor and recipient as closely as possible based on genetic markers, particularly human leukocyte antigens (HLAs). Immunosuppressive drugs are also commonly administered to dampen the recipient's immune system and prevent it from attacking the allograft.

Examples of allogenetic procedures include kidney transplants, heart transplants, and skin grafts from a different person. Conversely, autologous material comes from the same individual, and syngeneic material comes from an identical twin, neither of which elicits the same level of immune rejection.
