Alkionkehitys, also known as embryogenesis, is the fundamental biological process by which a multicellular organism develops from an initial cell, typically a zygote, into its mature form. This complex journey involves a series of precisely orchestrated cellular events, including cell division, differentiation, and morphogenesis.

The process begins with fertilization, where a sperm fuses with an egg to form a zygote, the single cell containing the complete genetic blueprint for the new organism. The zygote then undergoes rapid cell divisions, a process called cleavage, increasing the number of cells without a significant increase in overall size. This leads to the formation of a blastula, a hollow ball of cells.

Following the blastula stage, a critical event called gastrulation occurs. During gastrulation, cells rearrange to form the three primary germ layers: the ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. These germ layers are the precursors to all the tissues and organs of the developing organism.

After gastrulation, organogenesis commences. Cells within each germ layer begin to specialize, differentiating into specific cell types such as nerve cells, muscle cells, or skin cells. These differentiated cells then organize and interact to form distinct organs and organ systems.
