alkiloid
Alkaloids are a group of naturally occurring chemical compounds that mostly contain basic nitrogen atoms. The name "alkaloid" literally means "alkali-like." They are most commonly found in plants, but also in some fungi, bacteria, and animals. Alkaloids are produced by plants as a defense mechanism against herbivores, insects, and pathogens. Their chemical structures are diverse, but they all share the characteristic of containing at least one nitrogen atom in a heterocyclic ring. This nitrogen atom is typically basic and can accept protons, which is why they are often referred to as "alkali-like."
The biological activity of alkaloids is vast and varied, making them important targets in medicinal chemistry.
