The term "alkeemikot" is derived from the Arabic word "al-kīmiyā' al-jadīdah," which translates to "the new chemistry." Alchemy emerged in the Middle East during the Islamic Golden Age and later spread to Europe, where it played a significant role in the development of modern chemistry and science.

Alchemists sought to transform base metals into gold, a process known as transmutation. They believed that this could be achieved through the mastery of various techniques, including distillation, calcination, and the use of specific substances known as "philosophers' stones." Alchemy also encompassed the study of the nature of matter, the search for the elixir of life, and the exploration of the spiritual and mystical aspects of the universe.

The work of alchemists often involved the creation of complex symbols and diagrams, which were used to represent the relationships between different substances and the processes involved in their transformation.
