Alkanivorans is a provisional or poorly characterized name used in microbiology to denote alkane-degrading microorganisms. The etymology combines alkane with vorans, implying “devouring alkanes.” As of now, there is no formally described species with a validly published description, and alkanivorans is not recognized as a formal genus in major nomenclatural databases such as LPSN or NCBI Taxonomy.

In some studies, “alkanivorans” has been used as a placeholder term to refer to alkane-oxidizing microbes detected in hydrocarbon-rich environments, often in saline or hypersaline systems. The exact taxonomic placement of these organisms remains unsettled, with some observations suggesting affiliation with known hydrocarbon-degrading lineages and other reports proposing archaeal involvement.
