Aliphatic carboxylic acids are a common type of alkyl acid, distinguished by their non-aromatic hydrocarbon chains.

These compounds exhibit acidic properties due to the carboxyl group, which can donate a proton. The acidity varies depending on the length and structure of the alkyl chain. The physical properties of alkyl acids, such as melting point and boiling point, generally increase with the length of the alkyl chain due to increased van der Waals forces. Shorter chain alkyl acids, like acetic acid, are liquids at room temperature, while longer chain acids, such as stearic acid, are solids. They are typically insoluble in water, especially those with longer hydrocarbon chains, but soluble in organic solvents.

Alkyl acids have a wide range of applications. They are used in the production of soaps and detergents, lubricants, plastics, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. For example, fatty acids, which are long-chain alkyl acids, are a major component in the soap-making industry.
