aljabarut

Aljabarut, sometimes transliterated al-Jabrut, is a term in Islamic mysticism referring to a world or realm of power within Sufi cosmology. It is most often discussed in the works of Ibn Arabi and later Sufi thinkers, where reality is described as consisting of multiple levels through which divine realities are mediated to creation. In this framework, the Jabarut realm is associated with divine power, sovereignty, and the operation of God’s names and attributes. It is commonly described as a non-material domain connected to angelic beings and to the supra-rational structures that underlie the visible world.

In Sufi thought, access to the Jabarut is not physical, but spiritual or contemplative. Practitioners may be described as experiencing or understanding aspects of this realm through gnosis (marifa), purification, and spiritual realization, rather than through empirical observation. The concept is used to explain phenomena such as miracles, the accompaniment of prophetic and saintly figures, and the mediation of higher causes in the world of form.

The term is distinct from algebra. Al-jabr (the root of the word algebra) refers to a mathematical method for solving equations and is unrelated to the Sufi cosmological sense of aljabarut. In modern discussions, aljabarut appears primarily in studies of Islamic mysticism and metaphysical cosmology, where it is treated as part of a hierarchical view of reality rather than as a mathematical discipline.
