Algtekstile, or algae textiles, are textiles produced from or incorporating materials derived from algae, such as seaweed polysaccharides or fibers formed from algal polymers. They encompass fibers spun from alginate- or agar-based solutions, as well as fabrics made with seaweed extracts blended into other fibers.

Materials and methods vary. Some approaches produce fibers by dissolving algal polymers (for example alginate or carrageenan) and extruding them into filaments, often via wet spinning. Other common forms combine seaweed components with conventional fibers, such as viscose or cotton, to create blends that provide mineral nutrients, moisture management, or a distinctive texture. Brands have promoted seaweed-containing textiles under names like SeaCell, which typically pair seaweed extracts with cellulose fibers.

Production and supply chains rely on growing or harvesting algae, which can occur in coastal or controlled environments, followed by extraction, purification, and fiber processing. Algae can grow rapidly and with relatively low land use, but processing requirements and the need to ensure consistent quality pose technical and economic challenges. Blending with other fibers is common to achieve desired strength, durability, and washfastness.

Applications and properties vary. Algtekstile aim to offer breathable, comfortable fabrics with potential skin-friendly minerals and UV or antimicrobial properties. They are often positioned in sustainable or novelty segments of the textile market. Limitations include higher production costs, variable performance in strength and dye uptake, and the need for standardized testing and certification for widespread adoption.

Environmental considerations are context-dependent. While algae cultivation can reduce land use and may lower certain environmental impacts, life-cycle assessments depend on farming practices, processing energy, and end-of-life scenarios. Algtekstile remain a growing area within bio-based textiles.
