Raúl Alfonsín was an Argentine lawyer and politician who served as the President of Argentina from 1983 to 1989. He was a key figure in the restoration of democracy in Argentina after the military dictatorship. Alfonsín was born in 1931 and began his political career in the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) party. He was elected president in 1983, marking the end of seven years of military rule.

During his presidency, Alfonsín prioritized human rights and the rule of law. He initiated trials against members of the military junta for human rights abuses committed during the dictatorship, a move that was both celebrated and controversial. He also worked to strengthen democratic institutions and liberalize the economy. However, his term was marked by significant economic challenges, including high inflation and foreign debt.

Alfonsín's presidency faced numerous obstacles, including military uprisings and internal party divisions. He was unable to complete his second term, and his successor, Carlos Menem, also from the UCR but with a different political platform, took office earlier than scheduled. Despite the economic difficulties and the political turbulence of his era, Alfonsín is widely remembered for his commitment to democracy and human rights, and for his role in ushering in a new era of freedom for Argentina. He passed away in 2009.
