Alfonsín

Raúl Alfonsín was an Argentine lawyer and politician who served as the President of Argentina from 1983 to 1989. He was a leading figure in the Radical Civic Union (UCR) party and is credited with restoring democracy to Argentina after a period of military dictatorship. Born in 1931, Alfonsín studied law and became involved in politics early in his career. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1973.

Alfonsín's presidency was marked by significant challenges, including economic instability and the lingering effects of the military regime. He initiated trials for members of the military junta responsible for human rights abuses during the dictatorship, a move that was both praised for its commitment to justice and criticized for its potential to destabilize the armed forces. His government also faced a severe economic crisis, with high inflation and debt. Despite stepping down before the end of his term, Alfonsín is remembered as a pivotal figure in Argentina's transition to democracy and a staunch defender of human rights and democratic institutions. He died in 2009.
