Alfareseptorien, often referred to as alpha receptors, are a class of G protein-coupled receptors that bind to the neurotransmitters epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline). These receptors are primarily found in the sympathetic nervous system and play a crucial role in mediating the "fight-or-flight" response. There are two main subtypes of alfareseptorien: alpha-1 and alpha-2 receptors.

Alpha-1 receptors are predominantly located postsynaptically on effector organs such as smooth muscle, including blood vessels, the iris of the eye, and the bladder. Activation of alpha-1 receptors typically leads to vasoconstriction, which increases blood pressure. They also cause pupillary dilation and contraction of the bladder sphincter.

Alpha-2 receptors, on the other hand, are often found presynaptically on nerve terminals. Their activation generally inhibits the release of norepinephrine, acting as a negative feedback mechanism to reduce sympathetic outflow. They are also present postsynaptically in certain tissues, such as the brain and pancreas, where they can have diverse effects, including sedation and inhibition of insulin release. The balance between alpha-1 and alpha-2 receptor activity is critical for regulating cardiovascular function and other physiological processes.
