Alcestis is a figure from Greek mythology, primarily known for her story as told in the tragedy "Alcestis" by Euripides. She was a princess of Iolcus and the daughter of King Pelias. Alcestis married Admetus, king of Pherae, and they had children together.

The central myth surrounding Alcestis involves a bargain made by her husband. Admetus had neglected to honor Artemis, who then cursed him with a deadly illness. The Fates, or Moirai, were persuaded by Apollo to allow Admetus to escape his fate if someone else was willing to die in his place. Alcestis, demonstrating her deep love and devotion, volunteered to take her husband's place.

As Alcestis lay dying, Admetus was overcome with grief. However, before she could pass entirely, the hero Heracles (Hercules) arrived at Admetus's court. Heracles, initially unaware of the circumstances, was drunk and boisterous, but upon learning of Alcestis's sacrifice, he was moved to act. He wrestled Thanatos (Death) and forced him to release Alcestis, returning her to her husband. This act of resurrection makes Alcestis a unique figure in Greek mythology, as few mortals are ever brought back from the underworld. The story explores themes of love, sacrifice, duty, and the nature of heroism.
