This notation is most commonly encountered in older or less standardized Finnish texts, where it served to represent vowels that might otherwise be ambiguous or to differentiate between similar-sounding consonants. For instance, an underscore might be used to clarify the pronunciation of a vowel, especially in loanwords or dialectal forms. It could also distinguish between voiced and unvoiced consonants in certain contexts.

The use of alaviivamuoto has largely been superseded by more standardized orthographic conventions and diacritical marks. Modern Finnish, for example, uses specific letters with umlauts (ä, ö) and accents (á, é) to denote distinct sounds. While the underscore notation is rarely seen in contemporary publications, it can still be found in historical documents, linguistic analyses, and sometimes in informal digital communication where standard characters are limited.
