In Hungarian civil law, egy alapítvány is a separate legal person established by a founder who transfers assets to serve a predetermined objective. The foundation is governed by an alapító okirat (founding charter) and operates under rules intended to ensure that its resources are used exclusively for the stated goals.

Foundations can pursue activities in areas such as education, science, culture, healthcare, or charity, and their income and assets are generally protected from distribution to private individuals.
