Alakfüggvények, often translated as shape functions or form functions, are fundamental mathematical constructs used in various scientific and engineering disciplines, particularly in finite element analysis (FEA) and approximation theory. They are polynomial or piecewise polynomial functions that describe the behavior of a quantity (such as displacement, temperature, or pressure) within a simple geometric element, like a triangle or a tetrahedron.

The primary purpose of shape functions is to interpolate the unknown quantity at any point within an element based on its known values at specific points called nodes. These nodes are typically located at the vertices or along the edges of the element. The shape function associated with a particular node has a value of 1 at that node and 0 at all other nodes of the element. For any other point within the element, the value of the shape function is a weighted average of its values at the nodes.

In FEA, the complex domain of a problem is discretized into a mesh of these simple elements. By defining the behavior within each element using shape functions, the overall behavior of the system can be approximated by assembling these local solutions. The choice of shape functions influences the accuracy and computational cost of the analysis. Simpler elements with linear shape functions are computationally less expensive but may require a finer mesh for accurate results. Higher-order elements with more complex shape functions can achieve higher accuracy with fewer elements but increase computational demands.
