The influx of calcium ions then leads to the fusion of synaptic vesicles, which contain neurotransmitters, with the presynaptic membrane.

Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that are released into the synaptic cleft, the small gap between the presynaptic and postsynaptic cells. These neurotransmitters then bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic cell, initiating a response. This response can be excitatory, making the postsynaptic cell more likely to fire an action potential, or inhibitory, making it less likely.
