Akkumulátor is the Hungarian word for accumulator, which in a technological context refers to a device that stores and discharges electrical energy. The most common type of accumulator is the rechargeable battery. These devices are essential components in a wide range of modern technologies, from portable electronics like smartphones and laptops to electric vehicles and large-scale energy storage systems for power grids.

The fundamental principle behind an accumulator is electrochemistry. It typically consists of two or more electrochemical cells. Each cell contains an anode, a cathode, and an electrolyte. During discharge, a chemical reaction occurs, causing electrons to flow from the anode to the cathode through an external circuit, generating electrical current. During charging, an external electrical source reverses this process, forcing electrons back into the accumulator and restoring the chemical potential energy.

Different types of accumulators exist, each with its own advantages and disadvantages regarding energy density, power density, lifespan, cost, and environmental impact. Common examples include lead-acid batteries, nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries, nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, and lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries. Lithium-ion technology has become particularly prevalent due to its high energy density and relatively long cycle life, making it ideal for many portable applications.
