Literally meaning “time reference,” ajaviite concerns the temporal perspective of an utterance—whether events are situated relative to the moment of speaking or to another temporal point in the narrative. In practice, ajaviite encompasses how verbs encode time through tense and aspect, how subordinate clauses can establish a different temporal frame from the main clause, and how temporal adverbs and deictic expressions contribute to the overall time reference of a sequence.
