Aivastus is the Finnish term for a sneeze, the rapid expulsion of air from the lungs through the nose and mouth in response to irritation of the nasal mucosa. The form aivastuksen is the genitive singular of aivastus, used when referring to something related to or belonging to a sneeze, for example aivastuksen syyt (the causes of the sneeze) or aivastuksen kesto (the duration of the sneeze).

The sneeze reflex is a coordinated, involuntary process. Receptors in the nasal mucosa detect irritants such as dust, pollen, smoke, or pathogens. Signals travel via the trigeminal nerve to the brainstem, where a sneeze center coordinates the response. The sequence involves rapid inspiration, closure of the glottis, and strong contractions of the chest, diaphragm, abdominal muscles, and laryngeal muscles, followed by a forceful expulsion of air through the nose and mouth.

Triggers vary and include environmental irritants, infections, and allergic reactions. Cold air and strong fragrances can also provoke sneezing. A photic sneeze reflex—a sneeze triggered by bright light—occurs in a minority of people. Sneezing can occur singly or in bouts, and is often followed by a brief feeling of relief.

Purpose and health considerations: sneezing serves to expel irritants from the nasal passages and is a normal protective mechanism. Most sneezes are harmless, but frequent or prolonged sneezing can accompany allergies, infections, or other conditions. Management focuses on addressing the underlying cause, such as allergen avoidance, nasal sprays, or medical evaluation when sneezing is persistent or accompanied by other symptoms.
