Aikavälisanat are typically realized as noun phrases in the genitive of time units, or as fixed adverbial expressions that express duration, frequency, or scope of time.

Common forms include phrases such as kolmen päivän ajan (for three days), which signals a continuous duration; kolmen viikon välein (every three weeks), which expresses a recurring interval; tämän päivän aikana (during today), which marks a time span within a specific day; and kolmen kuukauden kuluessa (within three months), which indicates a deadline or limit. These expressions can modify verbs or entire clauses, depending on what part of the sentence they are meant to frame.

Semantically, aikavälisanat distinguish different temporal relations: they can describe how long an action lasts, how often it recurs, or over what period a situation is valid.
