ahok

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, commonly known as Ahok, is an Indonesian politician and former governor of Jakarta. He was born on June 29, 1972, in East Belitung, Bangka Belitung Islands. Ahok is of Chinese Indonesian descent.

He began his political career in East Belitung, serving as a member of the regional legislative council and later as the Regent of East Belitung. In 2012, he was elected as the Deputy Governor of Jakarta, serving under Joko Widodo. When Joko Widodo was elected President of Indonesia in 2014, Ahok succeeded him as the Governor of Jakarta.

As governor, Ahok implemented various policies aimed at improving public services, urban planning, and infrastructure in Jakarta. He was known for his straightforward communication style and his efforts to combat corruption. His tenure was marked by both public support for his reformist agenda and significant controversy.

In 2017, Ahok ran for re-election but lost to Anies Baswedan. During the campaign, he faced accusations of blasphemy for remarks he made about the Quran, which led to widespread protests. He was subsequently convicted of blasphemy and sentenced to two years in prison, though he was released in May 2019.

Following his release, Ahok remained active in public discourse. He has since been appointed to a leadership role at Pertamina, Indonesia's state-owned oil and gas company. His political career and personal life have been subjects of intense public scrutiny and debate in Indonesia.
