Agroclimatic refers to the study and assessment of climate as it relates to agricultural production. It encompasses the spatial and temporal patterns of temperature, precipitation, sunshine, humidity, wind, and soil moisture, and how these factors influence crop growth, yield, and agricultural risk. Agroclimatic information is used to evaluate the suitability of a region for particular crops and to guide farming decisions.

Agroclimatic zoning divides a landscape into regions with similar climate characteristics and crop performance. Zoning supports crop planning, cultivar selection, sowing and harvest scheduling, and water management. Indices such as growing degree days, chill units, reference evapotranspiration, and drought indices quantify heat accumulation, chilling requirements, water demand, and drought stress, enabling comparisons across areas and seasons.

Data and methods: Agroclimatic assessments rely on meteorological data from weather stations and satellites, climate normals, and sometimes climate projections. They integrate soil information and hydrological data. Models and GIS tools are used to map zones, predict yield potential, and assess risk from drought, heat waves, and excessive rainfall.

Applications and implications: Agroclimatic planning informs crop selection, planting dates, irrigation scheduling, and contingency planning for climate variability and change. Limitations include spatial heterogeneity within zones, data quality constraints, and the need to continually update zones as climate patterns shift.
