In some contexts they serve as collection pits for stormwater mixed with waste.

Design and construction: Afvalputten are typically excavated pits or tanks lined with concrete or impermeable membranes (such as HDPE) to limit seepage. They may include a sump for solids separation, a pumping system to remove contents, and ventilation or odor-control measures. Level sensors and monitoring wells are used to observe volumes and detect leaks. Closure or retrofit may require removing waste and sealing the pit.

Operation and safety: Storage duration varies from days to months. Operational practices aim to minimize leakage, sediment buildup, and hazardous releases. Regular inspection, maintenance of liners and pumping equipment, and proper handling of retrieved waste are essential. In some jurisdictions, secondary containment and permit requirements apply.

Environmental and regulatory context: Afvalputten can pose risks to soil and groundwater if they leak or overflow. Regulations often cover siting, construction standards, leak detection, emergency response, and reporting. Decommissioning involves emptying, cleaning, and remediation of the site.
