Afstammingsbanden is a concept used in anthropology and sociology to describe the social ties that connect people through shared ancestry. These bonds can be formalized through descent groups—lineages, clans, or other kin-based organizations—but can also exist as broader social memory and obligation passed down through generations. They help define who belongs to a social unit and who bears responsibility for its members.

Descent bonds often influence patterns of resource sharing, inheritance, marriage rules, political authority, and ritual life. In many societies, membership in a descent group entails mutual aid, collective responsibility for dependents, and solidarity that extends beyond the immediate family. They provide a framework for organizing burial practices, naming, and collective identity.

Different systems of descent exist. Patrilineal descent traces membership through the father’s line, matrilineal through the mother’s line, and bilineal or double descent uses both. Membership is typically determined by birth and genealogical knowledge, sometimes reinforced by clan names, symbols, or rituals. Descent groups may be exogamous—requiring marriage outside the group—or endogamous, within it, depending on cultural rules.

In contemporary contexts, afstammingsbanden still shape identity and social participation in many communities, even as globalization and state institutions affect their reach. In research, the concept helps explain kin-based obligations, inheritance regimes, and the organization of communal life, while highlighting interactions between traditional lineage claims and modern legal or individual rights.
