Affugtere are devices that remove moisture from indoor air to control humidity levels. The term is used especially in Danish and Norwegian contexts, but the concept is widely known as dehumidifiers. Lowering humidity helps prevent mold growth, wood warping, condensation damage, and musty odors, and it can improve comfort in basements, bathrooms, and archival storage areas.

Most portable affugtere are refrigerant-based, using a vapor-compression cycle: a fan draws moist air over a refrigerated coil, causing water to condense and collect in a reservoir or be drained away; the air is reheated and recirculated. There are also desiccant affugtere that use hygroscopic materials (such as silica gel) to bind water, which can be advantageous at low temperatures or in very dry environments where refrigerant systems are less efficient.

Applications vary from household units to whole-house systems integrated into HVAC, and from portable units to large industrial dehumidifiers. Features include adjustable humidity setpoints, automatic shutoff, condensate drainage options, and energy-saving modes. Capacity is typically measured in liters per day (LPD) under standardized conditions; power consumption and noise level are important considerations.

Maintenance involves cleaning or replacing air filters, inspecting drainage paths, and periodic coil cleaning to maintain efficiency. Environmental impact relates to refrigerants and energy use; many modern units meet regional energy standards. Safety considerations include proper ventilation, avoiding blocked air intakes, and ensuring condensate is drained away to prevent water damage.
