Affisseja, or affixes, are bound morphemes attached to a word stem to modify its meaning or grammatical function. They cannot stand alone, and they attach in various positions around the stem. Affixes are categorized by their position: prefixes attach at the front, suffixes at the end, infixes insert inside the stem, and circumfixes surround the stem with both a prefix and a suffix. They are essential to many languages’ word formation, enabling derivation of new words and grammatical inflection.

Affixes can be derivational or inflectional. Derivational affixes create new words or change word class (for example, happy -> happiness; or teach -> teacher). Inflectional affixes express grammatical categories such as tense, number, case, or mood without changing the core meaning.

In Finnish, affixation is a central organizing principle. The language is highly agglutinative, using long chains of affixes on nouns, verbs, and adjectives to convey case, number, possession, tense, aspect, mood, and negation. For example, talo means house; talossa means in the house (talo + -ssa with vowel harmony). The form talojen would express a genitive plural relation (in context, “of the houses” or “houses’”). The wide use of affixes allows relatively free word order while preserving rich meaning in a single word form.

Understanding affisseja is crucial for morphology and typology because they illustrate how languages encode grammatical and lexical information through bound morphemes rather than standalone words.
