Aerosolstudier, or aerosol science, is the interdisciplinary study of aerosols—substances composed of tiny solid or liquid particles suspended in a gas. The field investigates sources and formation, physical and chemical properties, transport and transformation processes, and the effects of aerosols on health, the environment, and climate.

Aerosols originate from natural processes such as dust storms, sea spray, volcanic emissions, and biological aerosols, as well as human activities including combustion and industrial processes. Particle sizes range from a few nanometers to several micrometers; properties such as composition, hygroscopicity, morphology, and phase state influence behavior in air and interactions with light and clouds.

Measurement and analysis combine in-situ methods and remote sensing. Instruments commonly used include optical particle counters, aerosol spectrometers, scanning mobility particle sizers, differential mobility analyzers, aerosol mass spectrometers, and filter-based assays. Researchers model emission, transport, coagulation, condensation, aging, and deposition of aerosols in laboratory and field settings.

Applications span air quality management, occupational hygiene, climate research, and pharmaceutical inhalation therapy. Aerosol findings inform health risk assessments and regulatory standards, guide mitigation strategies, and support understanding of cloud formation and climate forcing through aerosol–radiation and aerosol–cloud interactions.

Education and research occur in universities, national laboratories, and environmental agencies worldwide. Key challenges include measurement uncertainties, method standardization, data harmonization, and reconciling laboratory results with field observations. Ongoing work aims to improve prediction of aerosol behavior and its impacts on health, weather, and climate.
