Aerosols are a type of dispersion in which fine solid particles or liquid droplets are suspended in a gaseous medium. This gas is often air, but can be any gas. The term "aerosol" can refer to both the dispersed particles and the dispersed system itself. In common usage, the term often refers to products packaged in aerosol cans, which use a propellant to expel a liquid or solid from the can in a fine mist. These products can include deodorants, paints, hairspray, and cleaning agents.

The size of particles in an aerosol can range from about 1 nanometer to 100 micrometers. Larger particles tend to settle out of the gas relatively quickly due to gravity, while smaller particles can remain suspended for much longer periods. The properties and behavior of an aerosol depend heavily on the size, shape, and concentration of the suspended particles, as well as the properties of the suspending gas.

Aerosols are important in many natural phenomena and human activities. In the atmosphere, naturally occurring aerosols include dust, sea salt, volcanic ash, and water droplets. These atmospheric aerosols play a significant role in climate by scattering and absorbing solar radiation, and by acting as condensation nuclei for cloud formation. Anthropogenic aerosols, produced by human activities such as burning fossil fuels and industrial processes, can also influence climate and air quality. In medicine, inhalers deliver aerosolized medication directly to the lungs.
