Adrenergen is a term sometimes used to refer to substances that mimic or enhance the effects of adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine). These are endogenous catecholamines produced by the body, primarily by the adrenal glands and the sympathetic nervous system. Adrenergenic substances can be broadly categorized into agonists, which bind to and activate adrenergic receptors, and reuptake inhibitors, which block the reabsorption of these neurotransmitters, thereby increasing their concentration in the synaptic cleft.

The effects of adrenergenic substances are widespread, influencing numerous physiological processes. They typically lead to an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, dilation of the pupils, increased blood flow to muscles, and a general "fight-or-flight" response. This heightened state prepares the body for intense physical activity or stressful situations.

Pharmacologically, adrenergenic agents are employed in various medical treatments. For instance, some are used to treat anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction, by counteracting the effects of histamine and constricting blood vessels. Others are used in nasal decongestants to reduce swelling of the nasal passages. In the management of cardiac arrest, adrenaline is a critical medication. However, due to their potent effects, adrenergenic substances can also have side effects, including anxiety, tremors, and cardiovascular complications, and their use is carefully regulated. The term "adrenergen" is not as commonly used in formal scientific literature as more specific terms like adrenergic agonists or sympathomimetics.
