Adopci is a term that in many contexts refers to adoption, the legal and social process by which a person becomes the parent of a child who is not biologically related to them. In legal systems around the world, adoption creates a permanent parent–child relationship, typically transferring parental rights and responsibilities from the birth parents to the adoptive guardians, subject to court approval and ongoing duties.

Types of adoption include domestic adoption (within the same country), foster care adoption (where a child in foster care is permanently placed with an adoptive family), intercountry or international adoption, intrafamilial or relative adoption (by a family member), and stepchild adoption (through marital changes). Some contexts also discuss embryo adoption as a separate category.

Birth parents or guardians may need to consent or have their rights terminated by court order. After a match is made, a finalization or decree seals the adoption, followed by ongoing post-adoption support and, in some cases, open contact with birth families.

Legal frameworks: The Hague Adoption Convention aims to protect children in international adoptions and prevent trafficking. National laws govern eligibility, residency, consent, and post-adoption responsibilities. Open versus closed adoption arrangements affect access to birth records and ongoing contact with biological relatives.

Social aspects: Adoption is influenced by cultural norms, beliefs about family and genetics, and stigma in some communities. Post-adoption services, counseling, and support networks help adoptive families manage identity, language or cultural transmission, and relationships with birth relatives.
