Adenoidismo refers to a condition characterized by the enlargement of the adenoids, which are masses of lymphoid tissue located in the nasopharynx, the upper part of the throat behind the nose. The adenoids are part of the immune system and play a role in defending against infections, particularly in children. When they become enlarged, they can obstruct the nasal passages and the Eustachian tubes, leading to various respiratory and ear-related symptoms.

Enlarged adenoids, or adenoid hypertrophy, are most commonly observed in children between the ages of 3 and 7. The condition can result from frequent infections, allergies, or genetic predisposition. Symptoms often include chronic nasal congestion, mouth breathing, snoring, frequent ear infections, hearing difficulties, and a stuffy or runny nose. In severe cases, children may experience sleep disturbances, such as sleep apnea, where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination by an otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat specialist), who may use a flexible endoscope to visualize the adenoids. Additional tests, such as a CT scan or MRI, may be performed to assess the extent of enlargement or rule out other conditions. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of symptoms and their impact on daily life.

Mild cases may be managed with observation, saline nasal sprays, or antihistamines to reduce inflammation. In more persistent or severe cases, surgical removal of the adenoids, known as an adenoidectomy, may be recommended. This procedure is generally safe and effective, with most children experiencing relief from symptoms shortly after surgery. Complications are rare but can include bleeding, infection, or nasal obstruction. Recovery typically involves a few days of rest and avoiding strenuous activities.

Prevention focuses on reducing exposure to respiratory infections, maintaining good hygiene, and managing allergies. Regular handwashing, vaccinations, and avoiding smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke can help minimize the risk of adenoid enlargement.
