acordase

Acordase is a form of the Spanish pronominal verb acordarse, which means to remember or to recall. The form acordase is the imperfect subjunctive (pretérito imperfecto de subjuntivo) of acordarse, used with reflexive pronouns such as me, te, se, nos, os, se. It appears in dependent clauses that require the subjunctive, often in hypothetical, uncertain, or polite contexts, as in literature, formal writing, or regional speech.

Acordarse is reflexive and commonly paired with de when the memory concerns a specific thing: acordarse de algo. The imperfect subjunctive has two parallel endings in practice: -ase and -ara. Acordase corresponds to the -ase subset, while acordara would be the -ara variant. For example: yo me acordase, tú te acordases, él se acordase, nosotros nos acordásemos, vosotros os acordaseis, ellos se acordasen. Both acordase and acordara are accepted in many dialects, with some preference shifts by region and register.

Usage and examples

Acordase is most likely to appear in formal or literary writing, or in reported speech expressing a past hypothetical memory. Examples: “Si yo me acordase de la fecha, podría avisarte.” or “Dijo que se acordase del plan antes de la reunión.” More common in everyday speech are the non-subjunctive forms como “me acordé” (I remembered) or the imperfect subjunctive variante acordara in certain dialects: “si me acordara/si me acordase.”
