The designation indicates that the entity has demonstrated competence, impartiality, and reliability within a specified scope of work.

Accreditation is typically granted to activities such as laboratory testing and calibration, inspection, certification, or proficiency testing. In Sweden, the national accreditation body is Swedac, which assesses conformity with relevant international standards and may grant accreditation for particular scopes, often aligned with ISO/IEC 17025 (laboratories), ISO/IEC 17020 (inspection bodies), or ISO/IEC 17065 (certification bodies), among others. The result is a formal status that the entity can display on certificates, reports, or websites.

The accreditation process involves an evaluation of technical competence, quality management systems, and independence or impartiality. Certificates and reports issued by an accredited body are generally accepted nationally and, through international arrangements such as ILAC and IAF multilateral recognition agreements, can be recognized across borders. Accreditation is typically time-limited and subject to periodic surveillance, reassessment, or renewal to maintain status.
