Achtervoet is a term used in anatomy and veterinary anatomy to denote the hind part of the foot, i.e., the rear portion that bears weight and contributes to movement. The word is Dutch for “behind foot,” reflecting its position relative to the forefoot.

In human anatomy, the hindfoot consists mainly of two bones: the talus (ankle bone) and the calcaneus (heel bone). The talus forms the upper part of the ankle joint with the tibia and fibula, while the calcaneus forms the heel and acts as a lever for push-off during gait. The hindfoot is connected to the midfoot by joints such as the subtalar and talonavicular joints, and it works together with the midfoot and forefoot to absorb impact, provide stability, and enable propulsion.

In animals with an upright stance, the concept is similar but terminology varies. In quadrupeds and ungulates, the hindfoot refers to the rear foot and often ends in a hoof. The hindfoot contains tarsal bones, metatarsals, and phalanges, and plays a major role in locomotion and weight distribution, contributing to propulsion and balance.

Clinical relevance includes injuries and conditions affecting the hindfoot, such as fractures of the calcaneus or talus, Achilles tendon issues in humans, and hindfoot valgus or varus deformities. In veterinary practice, hindfoot lameness is a common issue in horses and other animals. Understanding the hindfoot is essential for assessing gait, diagnosing disorders, and planning treatment.
