Access network refers to the part of a telecommunications network that connects end-user equipment to the core network. It is the final link to the subscriber and is crucial for delivering services like internet access, voice calls, and television. The technology used in access networks has evolved significantly over time, moving from analog copper wire systems to sophisticated fiber optic and wireless solutions.

Historically, the public switched telephone network (PSTN) utilized copper wires for voice communication. With the advent of the internet, these copper lines were adapted for digital subscriber line (DSL) technologies, offering broadband internet access. However, DSL speeds are limited by the distance from the exchange and the quality of the copper cable.

Fiber to the home (FTTH) represents a more modern and significantly faster access network technology. It uses optical fiber cables, which transmit data as light pulses, providing much higher bandwidth and lower latency compared to copper. FTTH is increasingly being deployed to meet growing demands for high-speed internet and other bandwidth-intensive services.

Wireless access networks, such as cellular networks (4G, 5G) and Wi-Fi, also play a vital role. These technologies provide mobility and convenience, allowing users to connect without physical cables. 5G, in particular, promises substantial improvements in speed, capacity, and reduced latency, enabling new applications and services.
