Abiraterone is a medication used to treat prostate cancer, specifically castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). It is also known by its brand name, Zytiga. Abiraterone works by inhibiting an enzyme called CYP17A1, which is involved in the production of androgens, male hormones like testosterone. In prostate cancer, androgens can stimulate the growth of cancer cells, even after testosterone production has been suppressed by other treatments. By blocking the production of these hormones, abiraterone helps to slow down or stop the growth of prostate cancer.

The medication is typically taken orally, once a day, in combination with a corticosteroid such as prednisone. This combination therapy is important to manage potential side effects. Abiraterone is usually prescribed for men with metastatic CRPC who have already received docetaxel, a chemotherapy drug. It can also be used in combination with prednisone for men with metastatic CRPC who have not yet received chemotherapy.

Common side effects of abiraterone can include fatigue, joint pain, hot flashes, high blood pressure, and diarrhea. More serious side effects can also occur, such as liver problems, severe hypokalemia (low potassium levels), and adrenal insufficiency. Regular monitoring of blood pressure, liver function, and potassium levels is important during treatment. Abiraterone should not be taken by women, especially if they are pregnant or breastfeeding, due to the potential for harm to the fetus or infant.
