abirateroni
Abiraterone is a medication used to treat prostate cancer, specifically castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC). It is also known by its brand name, Zytiga. Abiraterone works by inhibiting an enzyme called CYP17A1, which is involved in the production of androgens, male hormones like testosterone. In prostate cancer, androgens can stimulate the growth of cancer cells, even after testosterone production has been suppressed by other treatments. By blocking the production of these hormones, abiraterone helps to slow down or stop the growth of prostate cancer.
The medication is typically taken orally, once a day, in combination with a corticosteroid such as prednisone.
Common side effects of abiraterone can include fatigue, joint pain, hot flashes, high blood pressure, and diarrhea.
