abaxiale
Abaxiale is a botanical term used to describe the surface of a plant organ that is directed away from the axis of the organ. It is most commonly applied to leaves, where the abaxial surface corresponds to the lower epidermis, opposite to the adaxial surface which faces toward the stem or the direction of light. The word derives from Latin, with ab meaning away and axis meaning axis; adaxial denotes the opposite, toward the axis.
In leaf anatomy, the abaxial surface often exhibits different features from the adaxial surface. A key distinction
The term abaxiale is also used more generally to describe any plant organ surface that lies away
Outside botany, abaxial is far less common but can appear in anatomical descriptions to indicate a side
