Zwisan

Zwisan is a fictional language created for a speculative world and used in novels, games, and media set in the Zwis archipelago. It is spoken by the inhabitants known as Zwisans and is central to the cultural identity depicted in the works.

Phonology and orthography: The language reportedly uses a set of about 23 consonants and five vowels, with no phonemic tone. Consonant clusters are common in word-internal morphemes. Zwisan is written with a syllabary of around 40 signs, where each sign represents a CV syllable, and diacritics mark vowel length and stress in older texts.

Grammar: Zwisan features agglutinative morphology with extensive affixation for tense, aspect, mood, and case. The basic word order is subject–object–verb, and modifiers generally follow the noun. The language marks evidentiality and definiteness through suffixal forms on the noun and verbs.

History and usage: Earliest in-world documentation is said to appear in manuscripts dating from the early medieval period of the Zwis archipelago, with continued literary use through the modern era. In the fictional setting, the language is endangered but maintained by schools and cultural programs, with a recent revival effort improving transmission to younger speakers.

In contemporary media products, Zwisan is presented as a living language with ongoing revival and expansion.
