Zvanje

Zvanje refers to a traditional Slavic and Balkan custom involving the ritualized abduction of a bride by her future husband or his family. The practice is most commonly associated with regions in the Balkans, including Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, and parts of Greece and Turkey. The term "zvanje" itself is primarily used in Serbian and Croatian, where it translates to "calling" or "summoning," reflecting the bride's perceived "invitation" to join her new family.

The ritual typically occurs during a festive celebration, often involving music, dancing, and a procession where the groom and his companions "kidnap" the bride from her family's home. This symbolic abduction is not meant to be taken literally but serves as a playful and culturally significant way to mark the transition of the bride into her new role. The bride’s family may initially resist, adding to the theatricality of the event, before eventually agreeing to the union.

Zvanje is deeply rooted in Slavic folklore and reflects themes of love, tradition, and community bonding.
