ZrO2based

ZrO2based refers to materials where zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), also known as zirconia, is the primary component or forms the base structure. Zirconia is a white, crystalline oxide of zirconium. It is known for its high melting point, excellent strength, hardness, and resistance to corrosion and thermal shock.

These properties make ZrO2based materials suitable for a wide range of applications. In dentistry, they are used for crowns, bridges, and implants due to their biocompatibility and aesthetic qualities. In ceramics, they serve as refractories for high-temperature furnaces, as cutting tools, and as wear-resistant coatings.

ZrO2based ceramics can exist in different crystalline phases: monoclinic, tetragonal, and cubic. The phase stability is highly dependent on temperature and the presence of stabilizing oxides such as yttrium oxide (Y2O3) or calcium oxide (CaO). Stabilized zirconia, particularly yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), is widely employed in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) as an electrolyte due to its ionic conductivity at elevated temperatures.

The synthesis and processing of ZrO2based materials involve techniques like powder metallurgy, slip casting, and additive manufacturing. Surface modifications and composite formations are also common to tailor specific properties for advanced technological uses, including sensors and thermal barrier coatings for aerospace engines.
