Zn65

Zn-65 is a radioisotope of zinc with mass number 65 and atomic number 30. It is not stable and does not occur in appreciable amounts in natural zinc; it is produced in nuclear reactors or particle accelerators for research and practical uses.

In production, Zn-65 is typically generated by neutron capture on zinc-64, via the reaction Zn-64(n, gamma) Zn-65. It can also be produced in other irradiation schemes that convert zinc targets into Zn-65. The isotope has a half-life of approximately 244 days and decays by electron capture to Cu-65. The decay emits X-rays and gamma rays that allow detection by common radiation-surveillance instruments and gamma-ray spectrometers.

Applications for Zn-65 primarily involve its use as a radiotracer to study zinc metabolism in biological systems, including plants and animals, as well as in environmental tracer experiments. Its gamma and X-ray emissions enable tracing of zinc uptake, distribution, and excretion in experimental settings. Zn-65 can also serve as a calibration or reference source for laboratory gamma spectroscopy instruments.

Handling and safety considerations are essential due to its radioactive nature. Zn-65 requires appropriate facilities, shielding, and regulatory compliance for production, storage, use, and waste management. Its moderate half-life means that, while it remains hazardous for several months, it does not persist for many years, aiding long-term scientific applications when properly controlled.
